International law is the set of rules, norms, and standards generally recognized as binding between states. It establishes norms for states across a broad range of domains, including war and diplomacy, economic relations, and human rights. International law differs from state-based domestic legal systems in that it is primarily, though not exclusively, applicable to states, rather than to individuals, and operates largely through consent, since there is no universally accepted authority to enforce it upon sovereign states. States may choose to not abide by international law, and even to breach a treaty but such violations, particularly of peremptory norms, can be met with disapproval by others and in some cases coercive action ranging from diplomatic and economic sanctions to war.

നിയമത്തിന്റെ പ്രധാന തരംതിരുവുകളാണ് രാഷ്ടാന്തരവ്യവഹാര സംബന്ധിയായ അന്തർദേശീയ നിയമവും അതത് രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ വ്യക്തി-സമൂഹക്രമം സംബന്ധിച്ച തദ്ദേശീയ നിയമവും. രാജ്യങ്ങൾ തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധങ്ങളെയും ഇടപാടുകളെയും സമാധാനകാലത്തും യുദ്ധകാലത്തും യുദ്ധപരിതഃസ്ഥിതിയിലും നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്ന നിയമവ്യവസ്ഥയാണ് അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര നിയമം അഥവാ അന്തർദ്ദേശീയ നിയമം. സാധാരണനിയമത്തിൽ വ്യക്തികൾക്കുള്ള സ്ഥാനം അന്താരാഷ്ട്രനിയമത്തിൽ രാഷ്ട്രങ്ങൾക്കാണ്. രണ്ടാംലോകയുദ്ധത്തിനുമുൻപ് നിലവിലിരുന്ന പരിതഃസ്ഥിതികൾക്കനുയോജ്യമായി അന്താരാഷ്ട്രനിയമത്തെ നിർവചിച്ചിരുന്നത് നാഗരികത കൈവന്നിട്ടുള്ള രാജ്യങ്ങൾ തമ്മിലുള്ള ഇടപാടുകളെ സംബന്ധിച്ച ആചാരങ്ങളും കീഴ്വഴക്കങ്ങളും അടങ്ങിയ ഒരു സംഹിതയായിട്ടാണ്. എന്നാൽ അതിനുശേഷം അന്താരാഷ്ട്രസ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുടെയും സംഘടനയുടെയും സംവിധാനക്രമങ്ങളും, പ്രസ്തുത സംഘടനയുടെ അധികാരപരിധികളും അവയ്ക്ക് രാഷ്ട്രങ്ങളോടും വ്യക്തികളോടും ഉള്ള ബന്ധങ്ങളും അന്താരാഷ്ട്രനിയമത്തിന്റെ പരിധിയിൽ പെടുത്താവുന്നതാണെന്നു വന്നു.
